Hard Skin On Feet

Answering some questions from my Twitter followers, a lot of people have hard skin on their feet. Many claim that it can be cured by walking barefoot. I’ve also heard of people “being made to” walk barefoot in a hotel room, or sitting in a puddle of water. But that is a gross, horrible and illegal practice.

One reader also told me about another weird occurrence — hard skin on the soles of his feet. There are several different causes of hard skin.

Aesthetic and Skin Diseases

These problems can occur when areas of the skin become more tightly-bound with dead skin cells.

Diabetes, ischemic, vitiligo, vitamin D deficiency and conditions that involve sweating (like psoriasis) can cause hard skin.

Perimenopause and menopause can cause sagging, tightening and collagen damage.

How to Remove Hard Skin on Feet at Home

1. Polish and Bleach.

To remove hard skin from your feet, apply a nail polish remover and cuticle oil on the area to loosen up the skin.

Then polish the feet with an oil-free polish. The remover will remove the paint, while the oil will help soak up the excess skin.

Finally, exfoliate the feet by soaking the feet in a bowl of cool water for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Don’t forget to scrub and file the dry skin with a sharp-bladed buffing or file.

To make it last, use cuticle oil a couple of times a day.

To remove harder skin, soak your feet in an Epsom salt bath for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a pumice stone to gently rub the feet to remove the skin.

To remove hard skin from the heels, rub a pumice stone into the skin.

Then use a nail file to remove the dead skin cells.

How to Prevent Hard Skin

Good care for feet is essential to keep them healthy. However, if the reason behind the skin condition is untreated, the treatment is easier said than done. Following are the important steps to prevent hard skin on feet.

Protect the Feet From the Sun and UV Rays

Wear long socks and boots in the warm seasons to avoid tanning of the feet. Keep the feet protected from the sun to avoid skin tanning. Moreover, your footwear should be water-resistant so that they do not get easily drenched during rain.

Change Your Shoe Care

Brush your feet at least twice a week with a pumice stone, dry, and then buff them with a buffing cloth. Shoe creams and powder don’t help as the solution should be used with regular care.

Hard skin is not a permanent condition but there are ways to improve it so it becomes less visible.

Make it part of your routine to gently exfoliate the skin and remove the hard skin naturally at home to keep your feet as soft as ever.
